The Amazon Kindle DX: Can It Save The Newspaper Industry?

Things haven't been favorable for the newspaper industry lately. Will the capability of the Kindle DX to publish newspapers in DX format help pull the industry out of its current slump? Since subscriptions haven't been strong enough to keep some newspapers running, there have been a lot of budget cuts made. This includes having to lay people off from the work force or removing some sections of the paper. To save the industry, some publishers have tried focusing on technology by making online editions of their newspaper, while others have made their paper available for subscription through the Kindle. But this move has been an open debate for various analysts.
However, there are those who say that newspapers are making a mistake by putting their hopes in the Amazon Kindle DX. Most newspapers have already spent the money to take their publications online. They make their money back through advertising revenue since the online publications are free to read by anyone. Now, they want to charge people to read that same free content on their Kindle rather than their computer. Some analysts see this as a waste of time and money that could be the dagger in the heart of the newspaper industry. While it is hard to imagine newspapers disappearing forever, pseudo-journalism in the form of blogs has already displaced a great deal of trained news reporters.
Still, it would be interesting to see how readers will react if more publishers come up with newspapers in Kindle DX format that subscribers can receive on a regular basis. Will this perhaps reignite interest in newspapers in general, and turn around the dwindling fortunes of the newspaper industry? With the Kindle considered as a revolutionary device in the world of reading, it could possibly improve the state of the newspaper industry. One thing that the papers are doing to give added value to the Kindle subscribers is to offer live updates, making news more accessible, even without a computer or internet connection. Just imagine waking up in the morning, turning on your Kindle DX, and then finding fresh news.
We really can't say if Amazon Kindle DX will be able to save the newspaper industry, but with the way things are going now, it would be worth it for them to give it a try.
